Runtz is a balanced hybrid bred by Cookies Fam and Backpack Boyz, crossing Gelato with Zkittlez. Released in 2017, the cultivar won High Times' 2020 Strain of the Year award and helped define the candy-forward, dessert-pedigree aesthetic that came to dominate modern dispensary menus through the early 2020s. Flowers carry a distinctive sweet-candy aroma layered over tropical fruit — one of the cleaner terpene expressions in the Gelato-Zkittlez pedigree. Effects are balanced: cerebral euphoria paired with mild body relaxation, neither dimension dominating. THC tests commonly land in the 24-29% range. Runtz is a foundational parent for many subsequent dessert-pedigree hybrids (Pink Runtz, White Runtz, Greasy Runtz, etc.) and remains one of the most-cloned cultivars on California shelves.
